Family-friendly hike to the mysterious Mittersee, which appears only for a short time in spring – with a detour to the Lake Carezza and the suspension bridge.

Did you know that Lake Carezza has a little brother? It is the Mittersee | Lago di Mezzo – a hidden natural gem in the forest that only exists for a short time in spring (around May-June depending on the weather). During this period, a meadow transforms into a lake filled with icy meltwater at just 8°C. By July, however, it usually disappears without a trace. As long as it is there, the Mittersee | Lago di Mezzo is considered a true natural spectacle and an insider tip. The bravest even dare to jump into the refreshing water or take a little ride on the raft. This family-friendly hike not only leads to the mysterious Mittersee | Lago di Mezzo, but also to the famous Lake Carezza and the suspension bridge – with magnificent views of the Rosengarten | Catinaccio and Latemar mountains along the way.

Directions

The route starts at the Paolina car park and first follows path [6] through the village of Karersee | Carezza, passing behind the small St. Josef church until reaching the playground. There, turn left onto path [10], which leads to the Grand Hotel Karersee | Carezza, where you cross the road. After crossing the road at the Latemar Forestry School, continue for a while on path [10]. At the next junction, turn left and follow path [12] to the Mittersee | Lago di Mezzo (note: the Mittersee | Lago di Mezzo only exists during the spring months, around May/June). Continue along path [12] until you reach Lake Carezza, where you can take a walk around the lake. A pedestrian underpass leads to the Lake Carezza car park, which you cross. At the end of the car park, cross the suspension bridge and follow path [6] towards the Karersee | Carezza settlement, returning to the starting point at the Paolina car park.
