Did you know that Karer See has a little brother? It is the Mittersee – a hidden natural jewel in the woods that exists only for a short time in spring (around May-June depending on the weather). During this time, a meadow transforms into a lake filled with 8° cold meltwater. But by July, it usually disappears without a trace. As long as it is there, the Mittersee is considered a true natural spectacle and insider tip. The especially brave even dare a jump into the refreshing water or take a small round with the raft. This family-friendly hike not only leads to the mysterious Mittersee but also to the well-known Karer See and the suspension bridge – offering great views of the Rosengarten and Latemar along the way.
Refreshment options:
The route starts at the Paolina parking lot and initially follows path [6] through the village of Karersee, passing behind the St. Josef chapel to the playground. There turn left onto path [10] to the Grand Hotel Karersee, where the road is then crossed. After crossing the road near the Forstschule Latemar, continue first on path [10]. At the next junction, turn left and follow path [12] to the Mittersee (note: the Mittersee exists only in the spring months, around May/June). Continue on path [12] reaching Karer See. Here, you can walk around the lake. Through the underpass, you reach the Karer See parking lot, which you cross. At the end of the parking lot, you go over the suspension bridge and on path [6] towards Karersee settlement and back to the starting point at the Paolina parking lot.
