Eggen/Ega in South Tyrol’s Eggental Valley

A truly idyllic mountain village

The little hamlet of Eggen, a village of 900 souls belonging to the municipality of Deutschnofen/Nova Ponente, lies just four kilometres from the valley station of the Obereggen skiing and hiking area, in the very heart of the Dolomites landscape – green or white, according to season. There are hiking and biking tours; ski pistes and toboggan runs just five minutes away for action-lovers; or the parish church of St Nicholas and the regional capital of Bolzano/Bozen for culture enthusiasts. There are also evergreen forests, majestic peaks, lush meadows, glittering snowfields and stunning views for those passionate about the mountains. Nor is it hard to linger a little longer in one of Eggen’s friendly hotels, guesthouses, holiday apartments and B&Bs!

Eggen: the facts

  • Eggen parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas, who was said to have saved the village from the raging waters of the Sambach and Geroldbach mountain streams: its Gothic bell tower stands as the village landmark.
  • While it should come as no surprise, we would like to make clear that this village has given its name to the entire Eggental valley! Reason enough for a visit.
  • Legend has it that, if you look very closely in direct sunlight, you can see dolls dressed in silk in the rock formations of the Latemar massif. Whether true or not, it’s best to see for yourself!
