The earth pyramids - steinegg

The earth pyramids of Steinegg/Collepietra in the Eggental valley

Giants of clay

In Steinegg you can marvel at a very special artwork of nature – primaeval giants made of clay. Here, over thousands of years, erosive forces have formed unmistakable sculptures, the so-called earth pyramids, in the forested landscape of the Eggental valley. Or was it perhaps the selfishness of one individual that was responsible for these mysterious formations? That at least is the claim of the legend surrounding the earth pyramids of Steinegg. But the best way to find out is to visit them for yourself!

The earth pyramids: facts and figures
  • The earth pyramids are actually a salutation from the Ice Age – and lie at the root of just as many legends.
Some of the earth pillars soar up to 30 metres skywards and can thus be seen from afar.
  • Their tops are covered by harder material that protects the underlying dried moraine clay – a glacial deposit from the Ice Age – from the rain, with the rocks atop the pyramids looking like little hats.
  • A circular trail runs close by these clay giants: just follow the “yellow pyramid” signs from Steinegg to the Katzenbachschlucht gorge via the Lahnenweg path and further via the Raffeinerhof farm, up the hill to the Dosser-Kreuz and, from there, directly down to the pyramids. On the way back, simply follow trail no.2 which will lead you back to Steinegg via the Katzenbachweg path.
