„You won't find a view like this anywhere else“

Dorothea Wierer, four-time biathlon world champion

Interview with biathlon Star Dorothea Wierer

Dorothea Wierer is the most successful South Tyrolean biathlete. She is a four-time world champion and two-time overall World Cup winner. The 34-year-old lives in Predazzo and was a guest at the 2024 Rosadira Bike Days not far from her home. In this interview, she tells us what role bike training plays for her and how much she loves the panorama in the mountains of her homeland.

As a four-time biathlon world champion, you can regularly be seen training on your bike in South Tyrol in the summer. What role does cycling play for you?

Cycling is an important part of training for us biathletes. We take a break for about a month after the season in April and then get back into training at the beginning of May. Cycling then plays a major role in basic training because we can train large volumes without putting too much strain on the body and muscles.

Do you prefer mountain biking or do you also ride a road bike?

Mountain biking here on the Rosengarten/Catinaccio and Latemar is fantastic. I've lived in the region for twelve years - and the way you can enjoy the mountains here is simply unique. However, I always have to be careful not to fall when mountain biking. That's why I only ride on easy forest tracks and am always careful going downhill. But we also often train on the road bike in a group. Once you have 500 kilometres in your legs at the start of the season, it really starts to be fun. There are also a lot of men in our training group - and then of course it's always a bit about who can get up the hills the fastest.

Can you enjoy the summer on your bike at all? Or do you always focus on winter and the coming season?

Of course I'm a winter sportswoman and I focus everything on my sporting success. It's wonderful to be in the snow - especially around here. But I can also enjoy the summer because I'm travelling less and am under much less pressure than in the competition season.

And where is your favourite place to train?

On the Lavazèjoch. I can go mountain biking and road cycling here in summer, and we have perfect training conditions here in winter. And no matter how intense the training is, you can always enjoy the mountains here. You won't find a view like this anywhere else, as the winter sports enthusiasts who come here from all over the world to train say time and time again.
