Historic walking path in Sissi’s footsteps: The Elisabeth Promenade invites visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll through idyllic scenery, complete with a monument to the Empress.

In August 1897, Empress Elisabeth of Austria – better known as Sissi – spent an extended holiday at the historic Grand Hotel Karersee. During her stay, she took numerous excursions into the idyllic surroundings, one of which led her along the very path that now bears her name: the Elisabeth Promenade. This historic walking trail, complete with a commemorative monument, stands as a tribute to the Empress’s love of nature and hiking. Even today, it invites visitors to enjoy a leisurely stroll through the stunning landscape around Lake Carezza (Karer See | Lago di Carezza).

Directions

This leisurely hike begins in Carezza at the valley station parking area of the Paolina lift. From there, follow path [6], passing the idyllic little church of St. Joseph and the Lake & River restaurant, until you reach the Carezza grain mill. Here, turn left and continue along path [6], which follows the Schönblickweg | Via Bellavista past charming old farms. At the Sohler Hof farm, turn left onto the narrow forest path [3], which gently winds through the woods until it opens up to a small clearing. There you’ll find the Elisabeth Monument, commemorating Empress Elisabeth’s visit in 1897. The return route follows the same path. Along the way, you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the historic Grand Hotel Carezza, where the Empress once stayed. For a relaxing break, the Meierei inn or the Ladritscher Hof farm are perfect stopovers.
