The hike starts at the Karerpass (1752 m). Opposite the sports shop, the hiking trail [1A] begins, which you follow until the junction with trail [552]. Initially, the path runs on a paved, single-lane road that soon turns into a forest path. Then, continue along trail [552] and reach a short, steep path to the Paolina Hut. From here, trail [552] leads over narrow paths, small streams, and scree-covered meadows to the junction with trail [9]. Following this trail, you reach the Vajolon Pass. The ascent goes uphill over a steep notch, where stairs, a ladder, planks, and wire cables facilitate the climb. Upon reaching the Vajolon Pass (2560 m), you can enjoy the wonderful mountain panorama and the view down into the Fassatal valley. The descent takes trail [551] and later [541] down to the Rotwand Hut (2283 m) and the adjacent Pederiva Hut. On trail [548], the route leads downhill over meadows and forests back to the Karerpass.
Alternative: Instead of hiking up to the Paolina Hut on foot, you can take the chairlift from the Paolina car park and join the route from the Paolina Hut. Return from the Rotwand Hut via the Christomannos Monument and descend by chairlift to the Paolina car park.
