Starkwölfel the dragon slayer of Deutschnofen/Nove Ponente
As Sigfried was to the Nibelungen legends and Achilles to the ancient Greeks, so the people of the Eggental valley have their Starkwölfel from Deutschnofen.
Once upon a time there lived at the Wölfelhof farm on the Regglberg mountain in Deutschnofen a man of such superhuman strength and power that there was none to be found like him. And, because he was so strong, he was simply called Starkwölfel.
A long time ago, when South Tyrol was much warmer even than today, the Regglberg mountain would produce fruit and corn in great quantities, with meadows and woods on the steep slopes.
But one day a terrible dragon came up from Trentino. He settled in the Sissabach gorge above the Steinmann farmsteads, causing fear among the people. The dragon devastated the whole area with its foul breath. Everything withered, the springs dried up, food was scarce and the villagers had no money to pay their taxes.
Finally Starkwölfel heard of this scourge and set off to kill the dragon. He reached its cave at noon where the creature had hidden deep in the rocky crevice. Starkwölfel placed a pail of fresh milk in front of the cave and waited. It was not long before the sweet smell of the milk lured the dragon out. In the meantime, Starkwölfel had got ready a large boulder and, as the dragon sipped the milk, he hurled the rock straight at its head. The dragon expired and its black blood coursed down to the Etsch river: it is said to have overflowed its banks as far as Trento. The people on the Regglberg mountain breathed a common sigh of relief and were able to return peacefully to their work.
