King Laurin and the "Enrosadira" of his Rosengarten
Who doesn't know the famous legend of the dwarf king Laurin and his beautiful red rose garden? But what is actually behind this breathtaking red glow of the Dolomite mountains in the sunset?
According to the well-known Dolomite legend, the dwarf king Laurin ruled inside the mountain. He possessed treasures of immeasurable value. But his greatest pride was his beautiful rose garden, which adorned the surrounding mountains with countless red roses all year round. A golden silk thread protected his precious roses from unwanted intruders. One day, the little dwarf king caught sight of the beautiful princess Simhild. He fell madly in love with the beautiful human child and stole her away with the help of his invisibility cloak. From then on, the captive princess lived in King Laurin's kingdom, guarded by his dwarf knights. The home castle of the fair maiden was in mourning and the brother decided to free the girl from Laurin's clutches together with the Goth king Dietrich. Arriving at the kingdom of the dwarf king, the knights destroyed Laurin's beautiful rose garden and an unequal battle ensued. When King Laurin had to reluctantly surrender, he had to lead his rival to his kingdom and directly to his love Simhild. The end of the dwarf kingdom and its rose garden had come. With a spell, King Laurin wanted to extinguish the splendour of the light of his rose garden forever: "...neither the bright day, nor the dark night shall ever see the rose garden again." However, Laurin forgot about the twilight between day and night in his curse, and this is how the breathtaking red glow - the "Enrosadira" - of the Dolomite mountain Rosengarten before sunset still occurs today.
But where does this red glow of the Dolomite rocks really come from?
The term "Enrosadira" comes from the Ladin language and means evening glow.
Especially on the Rosengarten, the impressive glow can be beautifully observed in the twilight phase. During this natural spectacle, the very low sun impressively highlights the striking rocky slopes of the Dolomites. The red-lit mountain peaks stand out clearly against the valley section, which is already in darkness.
One point that contributes to the formation of the "Enrosadira" is the composition of the rock faces of the Dolomites. The mixture of calcium carbonate, magnesium and the sun on clear evenings makes the rocky front of the Catinaccio glow an intense red. The colours on the rocky cliffs go from bright yellow to orange to bright red. A cool violet makes the mighty cliffs disappear in the dark night. The phenomenon can be observed in different ways all year round.
